- Discovery Centre, a registered charitable organization, was incorporated in 1985 and opened in October of 1990 with the following mission:
“To stimulate interest, enjoyment and understanding of science and technology through innovative, exciting, hands-on experiences for all Nova Scotians.” - Since opening its doors, Discovery Centre has provided over 950,000 visitors with informal science learning experiences. Last year, over 80,000 people visited the Centre.
- Throughout its 25 year history, Discovery Centre has developed more than 120 interactive exhibits. The Centre currently houses over 80 permanent exhibits.
- Discovery Centre's program staff develop and deliver unique hands-on curriculum based workshops on-site, live science shows, and educational programs that are delivered across Nova Scotia.
- The Centre has a Summer Science Camp Program that introduces the basics in science and technology in the fields of biology, physics, math, chemistry, astronomy, earth science and engineering.
- Discovery Centre's Science on the Road program delivers educational demonstrations and workshops to students across Nova Scotia. More than 25,000 student contacts were made this past year.
- Cool After School Science brings science enrichment to students in Halifax Regional Municipality's after school programs.
- The Centre has a member newsletter “Discover” and promotes its products and services through various marketing avenues.
- The Centre houses a retail store “The Discovery Shop” that carries innovative and fun educational science- related products for all ages. Net proceeds from this shop benefit programs and exhibits at the Centre.
- Discovery Centre gratefully acknowledges the contributions of federal, provincial and Municipal governments as well as the generous support of corporate sponsors and individual donors.
